Travel disruptions have swept across Southeast Asia as Indonesia’s Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano on Flores Island erupted dramatically on the night of March 20, 2025, sending ash plumes soaring over 8 kilometres into the air. Authorities have raised the volcano’s alert status to the highest level, prompting ongoing evacuations in the surrounding areas.

Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport is operational, and domestic flights are running; however, several international flights were cancelled on March 21, 2025. Some domestic flights experienced delays, while a few international flights were rerouted. Notably, flights between Bali and Singapore operated by airlines such as Scoot, Singapore Airlines, and Jetstar faced delays or had their schedules adjusted.

Jetstar, a low-cost subsidiary of Qantas Airways, also cancelled six flights from Australia to Bali on the morning of March 21, 2025, due to volcanic ash affecting visibility. The airline anticipates that service will resume later in the day.

The Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano last erupted in November 2024, resulting in loss of life and major travel disruptions for several days. Indonesia is well-known as a hotspot for volcanic activity, with over 130 active volcanoes scattered throughout the country.
